Expansion of Uxmal Ruins to Unveil New Archaeological Wonders
For archaeology enthusiasts and history buffs, a fresh adventure awaits as the Mayan ruins of Uxmal, second only to Chichen Itza in Mexican popularity, are set to expand their accessible areas, reports the Cancun Sun. Anticipated to open by year-end, these previously restricted sections promise new insights into ancient Mayan life. While not exactly ‘new,’ having stood for millennia, the sites, including a cemetery with human skulls and a fertility center, were off-limits to tourists until now.
Notably, access to climbing the renowned temple stairs will soon be restricted, a change sure to impact one of the world’s most famous pyramids. As these enhancements make Uxmal more accessible, officials predict a significant surge in annual visitors, potentially doubling or even tripling the current 350,000. Situated approximately 60 miles from the bustling city of Merida, Uxmal offers a mix of renovated and historically preserved sections. The rise in direct flights to Merida from U.S. airlines is expected to contribute to the heightened interest in exploring this archaeological gem.
