New Cable Car System to Replace Newark Airport Monorail
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has approved a $950 million project to replace Newark Airport‘s 27-year-old monorail with a modern cable car system. The aging monorail, prone to breakdowns, will be succeeded by five-car cable cars, offering increased reliability and resilience to various weather conditions.
Construction on the project is set to commence in 2025, with completion expected in 2029. Initially introduced by Governor Phil Murphy, the project has faced delays, partly attributed to COVID and perceived inflated cost estimates, but is seen as a significant step in enhancing Newark Liberty’s status as a world-class airport.
