In a surprising move, American Airlines has reversed its previous perception of Austin, Texas, and cut 21 routes from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). The cuts include major destinations such as Washington, DC, Kansas City, Tampa, and the Bahamas, marking a significant network shake-up. Despite the reductions, American emphasizes Austin’s continued importance, with plans to maintain service to 15 of the top 20 markets from AUS and connections to over 350 destinations globally.
While American still plans to offer 19 more flights than in 2019, the unexpected cuts raise questions about the airline’s earlier investments in Austin, which is just a four-hour drive from its Dallas headquarters. Southwest Airlines and Delta are positioned to fill the void left by American, as the airline navigates potential strike issues alongside other challenges. The fate of American’s plans to build a 15,000-square-foot lounge at Austin’s airport remains uncertain.
