WTTC Makes History with First-Ever Global Summit in Africa
The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) made history with its first Global Summit on the African continent, hosted in Kigali, Rwanda, on November 2, 2023. With over 1,200 delegates in attendance, the event showcased the strength and resilience of Africa’s Travel & Tourism sector. Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, emphasized the continent’s significant presence on the global stage, thanks to the success of the summit.
Key discussions at the summit revolved around the robust recovery of the travel industry, exceeding expectations and emphasizing the enduring appeal and resilience of the sector. Sustainability took center stage with the summit’s theme, “Building Bridges to a Sustainable Future.” WTTC presented its Environmental Impact Research data (ESR), covering 185 countries, as a benchmark for fostering a more eco-friendly travel future.
The potential for growth in Africa’s Travel & Tourism sector was a focal point, with the panel on ‘Unlocking Opportunities for Travel & Tourism Growth in Africa’ highlighting a projected annual growth of 6.5% and an infusion of $168 billion into the continent over the next decade.
WTTC also launched its groundbreaking Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging report at the summit. The report tracks DEIB practices in the Travel & Tourism sector, offering insights and recommendations for building a more inclusive industry. Delegates had the opportunity to explore Rwanda’s biodiversity through trips, including gorilla trekking and safaris in Akagera National Park.
Looking ahead, WTTC announced that the 2024 Global Summit will be held in Perth, Western Australia, underscoring the organization’s commitment to diverse and global representation in its summit locations.
